Membership Promises
Elder Letter by Jeremy Bledsoe

During my time serving in the military, I learned many valuable lessons. One of those lessons was that everyone must be committed to accomplishing the mission at hand. This means that everyone must be committed to fulfilling their assigned duty. A lack of commitment by anyone on the team could create a ripple effect that would affect the team’s ability to effectively carry out the mission. While the military carries out many high priority missions, none of them are as high of a priority as the church’s mission.

King Jesus has given us, the church, a mission of the highest priority – to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and to teach them to observe all that He has commanded (Matthew 28:19-20).

Jesus has called us to be disciples of Him and to make disciples of Him. If you are a Jesus follower, this the highest priority mission of our life!
The execution of this mission requires a high level of commitment. We must be committed to our growth in Christlikness; the church’s growth in Christlikness. This is not an individualistic pursuit, but rather a unified pursuit that we pursue together as a church body. The apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 4:15-16, “[15] Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, [16] from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.” (ESV) The church is built up when the entire body pursues Christlikness together. The church is built up when we are committed to serving one another for the sake of mutual edification. The church is built up when we, as a church, abide in Christ as the Lord does a work in our hearts (John 15). As a church, we must be committed to our pursuit of Christlikness. This level of commitment means that we must prioritize the building up of one another in Christ.

So what does that look like at TCBC? As members of our church family, we have made commitments to one another called Membership Promises. We have committed to one another that (together) we will live for God’s glory, that (together) we will submit to the authority of Scripture, and that (together) we will rest in the sufficiency of the Gospel. We have committed ourselves to submit to church leadership, to love one another, to promote church unity, and to pursue mutual edification. We have committed ourselves to share the Gospel and make disciples. We have committed ourselves to gather for worship, to connect in community, and to equip our families. You have made those commitments to me and I have made those commitments to you. As a church family, we have made those commitments to one another.
