The Discover Team
The Discover Team serves to help guests discover the gospel and their belonging at TCBC. Every guest is an image bearer of the one true God, a blessed opportunity and responsibility. May we steward each conversation as a means of worship for their edification and Jesus’ glory.
role: welcome hosts
Initial contacts designed to welcome, make known the gospel of Jesus, and guide guests to Discover Tri-Cities (DTC).
Action: First Welcome Contact
Connect in person or by phone with the assigned guest as many times as necessary to complete the following steps within the first 10 days.
Steps:
- Pray for the Guest
- Introduce Yourself
- Invite them to Browse tcbchurch.org/discover
- Invite them to Discover Tri-Cities (DTC)
- Introduce Prepare (Sun) and Behind the Reading (Wed)
- Ask for Questions
- Make Known the Gospel of Jesus
- Make Yourself Available
- Complete the First Welcome Form HERE
Optional Steps
- Meet the guest on a Sunday or Wednesday.
- Sit with them in the Gathering.
- Help connect them to a group.
- Eat with them at a Family Meal.
- Meet them for a coffee and conversation.
Step 1: Pray for the Guest
- Ask for the Lord’s help to be an ambassador of Jesus, His church, and to serve guests with love as a means of worship.
Step 2: Introduce Yourself
- Go beyond name and title. Bring them into your world. Share a little bit of your story, how TCBC edifies you and your family. Model vulnerability and authentic connection. If you need a script to get going, consider something like: Hello. My name is _____. I’m a part of Tri-Cities Baptist Church and I noticed that you and your family recently joined us for worship. I just wanted to reach out and welcome you guys.
Step 3: Invite them to Browse tcbchurch.org/discover
- They’ve most likely visited the website already, but direct their attention to /discover. From here transition into Step 4.
Step 4: Invite them to Discover Tri-Cities (DTC)
- DTC is where guests can learn what we call our Principles, Practices, and Promises (what we believe, what we do, and the promises we make to one another as a church family). DTC is designed to be small and facilitate a great environment for those new to TCBC to ask their questions. DTC is offered in a 3-session format every Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. in room 100 downstairs by the elevator. Registration is not needed. If possible, offer to meet them a little before 6:30 p.m. and help them settle into DTC.
- For those who absolutely cannot make it on Wednesdays, there are comprehensive DTCs offered a few times per year.
- For more information about DTC, visit www.tcbchurch.org/discover.
Step 5: Introduce Prepare (Sun) and Behind the Reading (Wed)
- For those who don’t have a connection or specific interest in a Go Group, Prepare and Behind the Reading are good places to connect those new to TCBC.
- Prepare: Sundays at 9:30 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. (meets in the Adult Hall). Prepare helps guide TCBC to respond to The Bible 2025 as doers of the Word. It primarily focuses on helping ready the reader to understand and apply the central truths they’ll read throughout the week to come.
- Behind the Reading: Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. (meets in the Kids Hall, first room on the right). The primary focus is a survey of each week’s reading. It’s a place to ensure readers have a comprehensive grasp of the storyline and an opportunity to ask questions and talk through the text with others.
- Not every new guest will be ready to jump into DTC. Help them get to know the people of TCBC and connect in discipling relationships at Behind the Reading if they aren’t ready for DTC.
Step 6: Ask for Questions
- Help answer what you can and connect them with those who can answer what you cannot.
- Direct doctrinal and philosophy of ministry questions to DTC.
- Do your best with general questions such as “Where does my teenager go on Wednesdays?” If you don’t know the answer, ask to connect them with someone who can help (the student pastor for example). You can find contact information for the TCBC staff at https://tcbchurch.org/group/staff/.
Step 7: Make Known the Gospel of Jesus
- We want every guest that connects at TCBC to know the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. You may articulate the Gospel by saying something like this…
“At Tri-Cities you will often hear us say that ‘we are a redeemed community of Jesus followers on mission together.’ This serves as an identity statement to remind us who we are in Christ. We are a “people” whom God, in His grace, has “redeemed.” God, the just and righteous creator, sent His own righteous son Jesus into the world to pay the penalty for sin. By his death on the cross and resurrection from the grave, Jesus has made a way for us to be reconciled to God. By putting our faith in him and turning from our sin, we are redeemed into the family of God.”
Step 8: Make Yourself Available
- Welcome follow-up conversations, texts, or emails. Just make yourself available for future questions and connection as needed.
Step 9: Complete the First Welcome Form HERE
- Once the above steps are completed, it is important to record the First Welcome Contact Form as soon as possible and no later than 24 hours. This helps our Discover Team ensure guests are being cared for.
Optional Steps
Each “Step” is the minimum expectation. Aim to nurture a sense of personal responsibility for the guest’s discipleship and assimilation into TCBC. View them as someone precious to you who you’ve been praying for.
Below are a few optional steps. The list isn’t designed to be comprehensive or with the expectation that you complete all of them. Instead, consider what would be most helpful and fitting for each guest. Maybe one of these would be helpful, perhaps something not listed, but take a moment to again consider the aim.
