The Gospels Part 3 – Jesus The Messiah Will Come In Glory Only After He Suffers, Dies, And Rises From The Dead

Big Truth:
Jesus the Messiah will come in glory only after he suffers, dies, and rises from the dead.

Mark 8:27-28
(27) And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” (28) And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”

Mark 8:29-30
(29) And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ.” (30) And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

Matthew 16:17-18
(16) Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. (17) And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. (18) And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Mark 8:30-33
Unexpected response
(30) And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him. (31) And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. (32) And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. (33) But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Matthew 16:22-23
(22) And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “Far be it from you, Lord! This shall never happen to you.” (23) But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me. For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man.”

Mark 8:34-38
(34) And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. (35) For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. (36) For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? (37) For what can a man give in return for his soul? (38) For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Big Truth:
Jesus the Messiah will come in glory only after he suffers, dies, and rises from the dead.

How can we be sure?
Mark 9:1
And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”

The Transfiguration
Mark 9:2-3
(2) And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, (3) and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them.

Mark 9:4
And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

Luke 9:30-31
(30) And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, (31) who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

Mark 9:5-6
(5) And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (6) For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified.

Mark 9:7-8
(7) And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” (8) And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

Matthew 17:6-8
(6) When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. (7) But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” (8) And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

How do we rightly respond?

1 Peter 1:10-11
(10) Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, (11) inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.

1 Peter 1:13
(13) Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

Big Idea:
Follow faithfully today in light of that day.

1 Peter 1:14-16
(14) As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, (15) but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, (16) since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

Big Idea:
Pursue holiness today in light of that day.

1 Peter 3:13-15
(13) Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? (14) But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, (15) but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

Big Idea:
Speak boldly today in light of that day.

1 Peter 4:7-8
(7) The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. (8) Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

Big Idea:
Love earnestly today in light of that day.

1 Peter 4:12-13
(12) Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; (13) but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.

Big Idea:
Endure opposition today in light of that day.

Final thought:

2 Peter 1:16-18
(16) For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. (17) For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” (18) we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain.

2 Peter 1:19-21
(19) And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, (20) knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. (21) For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Talk About It

  • Jesus said faithful followers die to self and find life in Him.  What does it mean to die to self and find life in Jesus?
  • At times, Jesus told his disciples and others NOT to tell people what He had done.  Why?
  • How does the reality of future glory in Christ change the way we live today?
