Hebrews 3:12-4:2 Unbelief Keeps Us From Entering Jesus’ Rest

Hebrews 3:12–4:2
[12] Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. [13] But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. [14] For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. [15] As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

[16] For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? [17] And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? [18] And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? [19] So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

[1] Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. [2] For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.

Big Truth:
Unbelief Keeps Us From Entering Jesus’ Rest

Hebrews 3:19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.

Example: Israel’s Rebellion
Hebrews 3:15-18 [15] As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” [16] For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? [17] And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? [18] And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

Big Idea: Be Faithful (3:14)

We have entered into Jesus’ rest only if we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

Hebrews 3:6 … And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.

Hebrews 3:14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

Big Idea: Be Aware (3:12)

Take care lest there be in you an evil, unbelieving heart.

Hebrews 3:12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

Big Idea: Be Connected (3:13)

Exhort one another that none of you be convinced falsely.

Hebrews 3:13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Big Idea: Be Humble (4:1)

Fear lest you not enter Jesus’ rest.

Hebrews 4:1-2 [1] Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. [2] For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened.

Big Idea: Be Ambassadors (4:2)

Good news has come to us.

Hebrews 4:2 For good news came to us …

2 Corinthians 5:17–20 [17] Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. [18] All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; [19] that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. [20] Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

Pray for:

Burden: May we be burdened for those who have not entered into Jesus’ rest.
