Part 5 – Membership Promises

Part 5 – Membership Promises

Message by Mike Laughrun.

If I had never joined a church till I had found one that was perfect, I should never have joined one at all; and the moment I did join it, I should have spoiled it. Still, imperfect as it is, it is the dearest place on earth.

– Charles Spurgeon

(16) As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. (17) And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” (18) Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.

– Mark 1:16-18

(16) But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. (17) When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. (18) And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.

(19) “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, (20) teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

– Matthew 28:16-20

Big Truth

Jesus calls every disciple to make disciples.

What is involved in disciple-making?

(15) Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, (16) from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

– Ephesians 4:15-16

Our Process:

  • Observe = Examine for the purpose of building up into Christlikeness
  • Add-  What is missing?
  • Expand- What needs to grow?
  • Restore- What is neglected?

Where does disciple-making take place?

(18) And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. (19) Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,

– Matthew 28:18-19

What is the goal of disciple-making?

(28) We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. (29) For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me.

– Colossians 1:28-29
