Hebrews 10:26-39 Faith In Jesus Changes The Way We Live

Series: Jesus Is The Better Hope
Speaker: Paul Mermilliod

Hebrews 10:26-39 (ESV)
26 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the adversaries. 28 Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. 29 How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
32 But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, 33 sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. 34 For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. 35 Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. 36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. 37 For,
“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

BIG TRUTH:
FAITH IN JESUS CHANGES THE WAY WE LIVE

but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
Hebrews 10:38-39

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen… And without faith it is impossible to please him (God),
Hebrews 11:1, 6a

So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead… For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
James 2:17, 26

For in it (the gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Romans 1:17

Big Idea:
Faith is confident trust in Jesus expressed in submission, devotion, and endurance.
(Heb 10:22-23, 38-39)

Big Idea:
Unfaith is a denial of Jesus expressed in deliberate sin, dishonoring God, and diminishing His Word that results in eternal judgment.
(Heb 10:26-31)

  • Unfaith deliberately pursues sin and runs from repentance. (Heb 10:26)
  • Unfaith diminishes and rejects the truth of God’s Word. (Heb 10:26)
  • Unfaith dishonors the Son, violates His atoning blood, and insults the Holy Spirit. (Heb 10:29)
  • Those living in unfaith have no hope of salvation. (Heb 10:26)
  • Those living in unfaith are under God’s judgment. (Heb 10:27-28, 30-31)

Big Idea:
Faith produces fear, awe, and honor of God.
(Heb 10:29)

And he (Jesus) said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.
Matthew 22:37-38

Big Idea:
Faith produces a desire to pursue holiness.
(Heb 10:26)

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Colossians 3:1-5

Big Idea:
Faith produces sacrificial perseverance.
(Heb 10:32-39)

let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:1-2
