(1) Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem…(3) For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet a boy, he began to seek the God of David his father, and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the Asherim, and the carved and the metal images.
2 Chronicles 34:1-3
While they were bringing out the money that had been brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the LORD given through Moses.

2 Chronicles 34:32-33
(1) An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.
(2) The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. (3) The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. (4) He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers. (5) The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it. (6) Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him. (7) The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. (8) But with an overflowing flood he will make a complete end of the adversaries, and will pursue his enemies into darkness. (9) What do you plot against the LORD? He will make a complete end; trouble will not rise up a second time. (10) For they are like entangled thorns, like drunkards as they drink; they are consumed like stubble fully dried. (11) From you came one who plotted evil against the LORD, a worthless counselor.
Nahum 1:1-11
Big Truth:
The Lord is a jealous and avenging God.
Who is the God of the Bible?
(2) The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging and wrathful; the LORD takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies.
Nahum 1:2
Big Idea:
Because God is faithful to His covenant, He jealously pursues and preserves His people.
(23) Take care, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make a carved image, the form of anything that the LORD your God has forbidden you. (24) For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 4:23-24
for you shall worship no other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God,
Exodus 34:14
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.
Ezekiel 36:22
The LORD is slow to anger and great in power, and the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
Nahum 1:3
Big Idea:
Because God is patient, the wicked prosper… temporarily.
(4) They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” … (9) The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.
2 Peter 3:4, 9
(3) … the LORD will by no means clear the guilty. (6) Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.
Nahum 1:3, 6
Big Idea:
Because God is just, all sin will face His wrath.
The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.
Nahum 1:7
Big Idea:
Because God is good, He saves those who trust in Him.
What is God about to do?
(12) Thus says the LORD, “Though they are at full strength and many, they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more. (13) And now I will break his yoke from off you and will burst your bonds apart.” (14) The LORD has given commandment about you: “No more shall your name be perpetuated; from the house of your gods I will cut off the carved image and the metal image. I will make your grave, for you are vile.”
Nahum 1:12-14
Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.
Nahum 2:13
(1) Woe to the bloody city, all full of lies and plunder– no end to the prey! … (5) Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts, and will lift up your skirts over your face; and I will make nations look at your nakedness and kingdoms at your shame.
Nahum 3:1, 5
(7) And all who look at you will shrink from you and say, “Wasted is Nineveh; who will grieve for her?” Where shall I seek comforters for you? … (18) Your shepherds are asleep, O king of Assyria; your nobles slumber. Your people are scattered on the mountains with none to gather them. (19) There is no easing your hurt; your wound is grievous. All who hear the news about you clap their hands over you. For upon whom has not come your unceasing evil?
Nahum 3:7, 18-19
(1) Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? (2) The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying, … (4) He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision. … (6) “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
Psalm 2:1-2, 4, 6
(4) Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. (5) But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah 53:4-5
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
2 Corinthians 5:19
How do we respond?
In Christ, press on in faithfulness.
Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace! Keep your feasts, O Judah; fulfill your vows, for never again shall the worthless pass through you; he is utterly cut off.
Nahum 1:15
(2) But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. (3) For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. … (13) All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence.
Psalm 73:2-3, 13
(16) When I pondered to understand this, It was troublesome in my sight (17) Until I came into the sanctuary of God; Then I perceived their end.

In Christ, who forgives all our sin, leave vengeance to God and forgive those who sin against you.

Romans 12:19
(31) Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. (32) Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:31-32
In Christ, make known the Gospel of justice, peace, and grace.
(15) Behold, on the mountains the feet of him who brings good news, Who announces peace!
Nahum 1:15
(13) for “whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (14) How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? (15) How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”
Romans 10:13-15

Talk About It
- What is the difference between God’s jealousy and human jealousy?
- Does faithfulness now necessarily mean life’s circumstances get better?
- How does the cross of Christ represent perfect grace and perfect justice at the same time?
- If all sin will ultimately face God’s wrath and vengeance, how should I respond when others send against me?
