Philippians 2:5-13
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, [6] who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, [7] but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. [8] And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. [9] Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, [10] so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, [11] and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. [12] Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, [13] for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
Three Principles For Biblical Interpretation…
- We interpret Scripture within its context. (Passage, chapter, book, & whole redemptive story of the Bible)
- We use clear passages of Scripture to help us interpret less clear passages of Scripture. (Not vice versa)
- The meaning of God’s Word is found within God’s Word, not our personal feelings and experiences.
BIG TRUTH:
JESUS IS LORD
Big Idea:
Jesus Embraced Humiliation (2:5-8)
- Jesus emptied himself by becoming a servant.
- Jesus emptied himself by becoming human.
- Jesus humbled himself through obedience all the way to death.
- Jesus humbled himself through death on a cross.
Hebrews 5:8-9
Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. [9] And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
Isaiah 53:7-8, 12
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. [8] By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? [12]… he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors…
Big Idea:
Jesus Reigns in Exaltation (2:9-11)
- Jesus has been given the name above every name.
- Every knee will bow to Jesus.
- Every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.
- All of this is for the glory of God the father.
Hebrews 5:5
So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”
Isaiah 45:22-25
“Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. [23] By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.’ [24] “Only in the LORD, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; to him shall come and be ashamed all who were incensed against him. [25] In the LORD all the offspring of Israel shall be justified and shall glory.”
Big Idea:
We Respond to Jesus in Adoration (2:9-12)
Big Idea:
We Respond to Jesus in Humble Submission (2:2-5)
Big Idea:
We Respond to Jesus in Awe-Filled Devotion (2:12-13)
Talk About It
- What does it mean that Jesus is Lord?
- How have you seen God working in you for His purposes and His glory?
