Big Truth:
Jesus’ Kingdom Is Not Of This World
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world.” … (John 18:36).
Big Idea:
Jesus Followers Seek A Kingdom Beyond This World
Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness … (Matthew 6:33). Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life (John 12:25).
The Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 5-7 & Luke 6
Matthew 5:1-12
[1] Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. [2] And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: [3] “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [4] Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. [5] Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. [6] Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. [7] Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. [8] Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. [9] Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. [10] Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. [11] Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. [12] Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
“Jesus is teaching the nature of the Kingdom. … The Beatitudes are a description of the lifestyle of those who belong to the Kingdom. You don’t read the Beatitudes, take the test and if you get a good enough grade you’re welcomed into the Kingdom. You read the Beatitudes and say, I’ll never get in on my own. That’s why Jesus came. … What we have here is a call to a Christian counter-culture.” (Alistair Begg, 2005)
Who Are The Blessed?
1. Poor in Spirit (3) – The Spiritually Bankrupt
World says: You got this.
Jesus says: Blessed are the hopelessly desperate.
Realization of spiritual bankruptcy leads to:
2. Mourn (4) – The Broken Hearted
World says: No sorrow in joy.
Jesus says: Blessed are those who mourn their standing before God.
Healthy sorrow in our spiritual brokenness leads to:
3. Meek (5) – The Yielding
World says: Meek is weak; be you.
Jesus says: Blessed are those who yield their life and pursue the will of the Father.
Yielding my will before God leads to:
4. Hunger & Thirst for Righteousness (6) – Those Who Treasure Truth
World says: Follow the passion of your heart – You’ll be satisfied.
Jesus says: Seek Me – You’ll be satisfied.
Treasuring God’s righteousness and truth leads to:
5. Merciful (7) – The Overwhelmed by Grace
World says: You’re entitled.
Jesus says: You’re compelled to mercy because you were shown mercy.
Being compelled to grace-driven mercy leads to:
6. Pure in Heart (8) – The Undivided
World says: You can compartmentalize.
Jesus says: Blessed are those who are wholly purposed.
Being undivided in our love for Jesus leads to:
7. Peacemakers (9) – The Proclaimers of True Peace
World says: Peace comes from within.
Jesus says: Blessed are those who proclaim peace in Jesus.
Proclaiming the peace of Jesus leads to:
8. Persecuted (10) – The Oppressed
World says: Love is affirming.
Jesus says: Blessed are the persecuted who proclaim Jesus and Jesus alone.
Persecution in Jesus leads to:
9. Reviled (11) – The Hated & Falsely Slandered
World says: I want it now.
Jesus says: (12) “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Matthew 7:24–27 [24] “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. [25] And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. [26] And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. [27] And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Colossians 1:15–20 [15] He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
