The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil. 1 Timothy 3:1-7
One of the great gifts that God has given His people is elder leadership. Pastors serve the family of God in plurality through shepherding, leadership, and oversight. At TCBC, we have elders who serve vocationally as paid staff members and others who serve as unpaid lay elders in our church. We have some elders who give oversight to the whole of the church family and other elders that provide oversight to a ministry or a group of people.
One of the joys that we get to celebrate as a church family this weekend is ordaining Brandon VanHuss to pastoral ministry at TCBC! Ordination is the overflow of a process that culminates in the public recognition and commissioning of an individual within a local body of believers to pastoral ministry. Brandon will serve as a lay elder who provides oversight within the kids ministry alongside Pastor Austin. Hear more of Brandon’s story by watching the video above and take time this week to pray for him and his family as he steps into this new leadership role.
